“Day old danish?” Zara asks, holding up a bear claw as I make my way to where she, Rice, and Sheriff Dutton are standing.

“No thanks.” I turn my attention to Rice. “I just got off the phone with my SAC. He’s about as happy as you are.”

“Glad to know we’re all on the same page.” My call with Wallace wasn’t as contentious as I thought it would be, and he agrees we’re not being given a fair shake up here, though there’s little he can do about it. Except the one thing I didn’t want him to do.

“He’s sending two more agents to assist with the investigation, and to help shore up the Collins Police Department, at least until we can get this sorted out.”

Rice shakes his head. “No offense, but two agents aren’t going to replace an entire police force.”

“They’re not meant to, I was hoping Sheriff Dutton might be able to lend a hand,” I say, nodding at the sheriff.

Her eyes widen, as if she seems surprised to be addressed. “Oh sure. I can pull in a couple of retirees, maybe a few who’ve moved on to other departments. Best case I can spare one or two of my own. I’d say I can contribute maybe five or more, in all.”

“It’s a start,” Rice says.

I turn, looking at the doors. “Where is this lawyer? Doesn’t he understand the urgency of this situation?”

“I doubt he does,” Rice says. “I didn’t speak to him personally, and if I know Eastly, he wouldn’t mind waiting a little longer just to piss us off. We insulted his integrity back there. He’ll want to make us pay.”

“Sheriff, you need to find that evidence bag,” I tell her.

She gives me an incredulous look. “That bag could be at the bottom of Lake Emerald for all I know. How do you expect me to locate it?”

“Em, was the phone still on when you cloned it?” Zara asks.

Rice puts up a hand. “Wait, you removed it from the bag?”

“No, I did it through the bag, never touched it,” I say, turning back to Zara. “I think it was.”

“I have the phone’s unique signal then; I can ping it.” She runs out of the station and comes back a minute later, hauling her laptop. “If it’s on and within range of a cell tower, I can at least get an approximate location.”

“And suppose you do,” Dutton says. “Where am I supposed to get the manpower to search for a tiny thing like that?”

Before she can answer, the doors to the county offices swing open, revealing a full-bodied man in a dark gray suit. He’s wearing a frown the size of Texas and glares at each of us, in turn. “Who’s in charge here?”

I step forward. “I’m Agent Slate with the FBI. I was the one who requested the warrant for Chief Eastly.”

He steps to me. “You are in big trouble, little lady.”

My mood darkens. “Don’t,” I say, stopping him in his tracks. “I don’t want to hear anything about how I look too young or too inexperienced to know what I’m doing.
